The John Lewis Pole Bar has long been the gold standard for window furnishings (curtain poles), renowned for its exceptional quality and extensive design choices. When tasked to improve upon this best-in-class offering, we knew we needed to offer more than pure aesthetics and deliver a comprehensive enhancement across all aspects of the Pole Bar experience.
Replacing an entire product range is a significant undertaking, and it becomes even more challenging when that range is class-leading. To navigate this complexity, we adopted a modular approach, which enabled us to dedicate more time to perfecting the details of fewer individual components while simultaneously maximising the number of possible product combinations. Our core focus throughout the project was the user experience, encompassing everything from simplifying the shopping experience and streamlining the DIY fitting process to ensuring the long-term functionality and longevity of the fitted product.
This design project kicked off with block modelling ideas, fleshing out a comprehensive range of components including brackets, poles, rings, finials, bay window components, as well as alternate fitting options to ensure every necessary element was covered. We then generated test models and samples across various suppliers, allowing us to physically evaluate materials and manufacturing approaches before diving into detailed CAD models and rigorous 3D printed model testing. Throughout this entire process, rendered visuals were continuously shared, keeping all stakeholders fully involved in the aesthetic direction and ensuring a cohesive vision from concept to completion.
