Desktop Display Solution

A cost-effective desktop banner, challenging conventional design and pricing strategies.

Overview
Desktop Display Solution

Challenged with creating the new norm we used injection moulded plastic over traditional metal extrusions. This resulted in a drastically decreased number of components and sped up production time. Of course, it all helped that the by-product of this strategy was killer aesthetics!

The simplified construction did not just help assembly at the factory, it also aided the end user to quickly and easily apply and reapply the graphic panels.

All components are specified to be recycled or re-used. At the end of the product’s life the product is easily disassembled, and every component is recyclable with clear markings on the plastic components.

The Product

The roller banner is the staple of portable marketing, you will find them everywhere. The desktop version is traditionally a mini version of the full size banner, with all cost striped to make them a disposable item. P3 wanted to develop a purpose specific product that would be reliable, reusable and cheap to manufacture. With high estimated sales volumes, we chose to utilise injection moulding which gave us options to create an no fixings (mechanical or bonding) construction and the opportunity to play with the aesthetic.

The Process

Setting out we explored the usage of the current products and determined a range of four sizes, A4 & A3 for Europe. Letter and Tabloid for the USA. This allowed the product to remain compact, whilst allowing users to replace their own graphics with readily available media.

Next up we focused on the physical functionality, specifically developing a simple user adjustable graphic tension system. The initial concept used a rubber band to keep tension, however through testing this proved unreliable, so a custom wound steel spring was developed. The outcome was a beautiful system which formed the main assembly mechanism as well as allowing the end user to re-tune their display for every media type and replace their graphics.

“Product design delivering a higher margins, with greater user experience and far lower environmental impact.
