Inspired by the razor clam, the clam shell design incorporates a floating gloss white cover, giving the base an elegant lightness. The unique design streamlines assembly by enabling the complete mechanism to be assembled within the base prior to closing the shell.
During the design process, a significant challenges arose: the primary preventing plastic components from twisting when the large steel spring, responsible for graphic tension, was wound as the graphic was extended.
To address this, we implemented a dual-pronged solution:
Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was conducted directly from the CAD model to predict approximate deflections, allowing for iterative design adjustments to achieve the desired results. Rigorous testing was performed, subjecting the plastic components to spring tension at 200% of its maximum operating load.
