Working alongside an up & coming tech start up, we developed an aesthetic which shook the ‘beige brick’ world of computing. Developing the aesthetic, backed up with the engineering to make it work, we developed a family of innovative products to match the revolutionary breakthrough in data storage technology.

We cannot believe this was 25 years ago! But we’re so proud of this project as this is where it all started, and it’s not very often you get to revolutionise an industry. Nexsan developed a technology which allowed the use of standard hard drives in industrial data storage. This not only reduced the cost by 90% but opened up faster data access.
Even though these products are destined to live in a cupboard or data center, Nexsan wanted to make an impression upon launch. Whilst competition was daring to change the colour of the ‘beige box’ to a ‘black box’, Nexsan gave us free reign to do something different.
Whilst we could have gone crazy with the styling, function was paramount. So, yes, we added metal flake to the plastics, but airflow was carefully sculpted through and around hard drives. EMC shielding was added through a mesh grid and interconnecting fingers. Accidental removal of hot swappable hard drives was eliminated by introducing a two step removal process, whilst still being able to do it one handed.
The result was a spew of industry awards and collaborations with Philips and Dell.
