Their goal was a more premium aesthetic and enhanced functionality, including better nesting for storage, easier cleaning for hygiene, and a more robust design by relocating fittings. Kwikscreen, a leader in hygienic and portable hospital privacy screens, sought our help to redesign their product’s feet and bases. The existing expensive sheet metal bases hindered portability and cost-effectiveness. The project brief aimed for a more cost-efficient, and premium-looking solution. Key functional improvements included better nesting for storage, easier cleaning for hygiene-critical environments, and a more robust design by moving fittings higher on the screen body. This project was a chance to innovate with new materials and manufacturing, transforming design challenges into superior solutions.
Collaborating closely with Kwikscreen, our process quickly moved from initial concepts to 3D CAD. We utilized Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to rigorously test various shapes, mounting options, and castor placements, establishing the mechanical fundamentals. With these in place, we shifted our focus to aesthetics, always adhering to the project’s core criteria. Sand casting was chosen for its rapid mock-up capabilities, low initial tooling costs, and the creative freedom it offered. Finally, prototyping tooling was produced, and sample batches were manufactured in Asia for comprehensive testing on the final Kwikscreen product.
