The Burn

Overview

The Burn didn’t just enter the world of whitewater kayaking, it set it ablaze.

Is it named after its fiery performance, a smackdown to the competition, or a cheeky nod to Scottish slang? We’ll let you guess…

Built for athletes who love to push the limits but crafted to welcome beginners to the thrill of whitewater, The Burn is where performance meets accessibility.

And behind the design story? A little piece of Mouse Design history: this is where the founders first crossed paths, with Rich starting out as Ben’s work placement student. A spark that ignited a lasting collaboration, and a legendary kayak.

The Product

The Burn is one of the most iconic and best-selling kayaks in the history of the sport, with versions still in use today. Launched in 2006, it redefined whitewater kayaking, giving professional athletes the performance to push boundaries while making the sport more approachable for beginners.

Built around user-focused design, the Burn delivers predictable, forgiving handling without compromising on high-performance capability. Its ergonomics were carefully refined, from seating and knee positioning for comfort and stability, to adjustable outfitting that transforms every body movement into precise boat control.

By combining performance design with ergonomics and safety, the Burn set a new benchmark in whitewater kayaking. Offering performance thats both responsive and accessible, making it a favourite for paddlers at every level.

The Process

The Burn was developed through an iterative, prototype-driven design process founded from extensive user feedback. The hull design evolved through multiple physical iterations, refining rocker profile, rail height, and hull geometry to achieve increased speed, manoeuvrability, and exceptional secondary stability.

Prototyping included asymmetric hull concepts and composite test boats, allowing rapid evaluation of performance characteristics before committing to production tooling. Ergonomic development focused on optimising paddler posture by raising the knee position, improving comfort, control, and energy transfer.

Safety and usability were integrated structurally through the ground-up redesign of the outfitting system, introducing a roto-moulded central pillar that replaced traditional foam and doubled as an emergency exit step in vertical pin scenarios. Hardware components such as grab handles and attachment points were newly developed and destructively tested to ensure strength, accessibility, and reliability.

The Iconic White Water Kayak
“The Burn is certainly not forgotten, and we’re sure it won’t be for years to come. However, time moves on, and we must keep moving forwards…”
