Educational Power Supply

Electronic switching power supply for use in the classroom
Overview
Creating the Educational Power Supply

The client had two clear objectives when starting this project. Move away from the traditional beige metal box to develop a product which has greater engagement for secondary school (11 to 16 years old) students. Secondly, a very strict development budget.

3D CAD modeling, concept design and photo realistic visuals to gain customer feedback.

The Product

Mouse came up with the concept of using a common Injection moulded part for front and rear of the product which drastically reduced the development cost. This design Integrated the feet and handle into mouldings. Whilst encompassing an interchangeable plate which houses the electronic interface. Utilizing off-the-shelf connectors, switches & LED components, reduced project timescales whilst further reducing costs. Thorough safety thinking throughout the design process through additional earthing, baffled ventilation holes and insulated heat sinks resulted in passing the stringent CE & UL certification on the first attempt. Lacells were then able to build upon the concept to build a product range by swapping out some of the simpler metal parts, but keeping the same external aesthetic by using common plastic parts.

The Process

Beginning with the core functionality and necessary components, we developed a 3D spatial model. This model allowed us to efficiently organise internal components into a compact space whilst ensuring optimal air circulation and cooling. Our focus then shifted to the assembly of the enclosure. Drawing on our expertise, we streamlined components, simplifying the manufacturing processes, and concealed assembly hardware for a more refined finish.
