Mouse Design, Delivers Innovative Buoyancy Aid Design for Team GBR SailGP’s High-Performance Racing

We’re excited to showcase a project that demonstrates our expertise in bespoke design and advanced engineering: the creation of custom buoyancy aids (Personal Flotation Devices PFD’s) for the GBR SailGP racing team.

SailGP is a cutting-edge international sailing league that captures audiences worldwide with its intense races featuring national teams all piloting identical, technologically advanced F50 foiling catamarans. These hydrofoil craft reach speeds close to 100 km/h, lifting their hulls above the water and demanding exceptional skill, teamwork, and strategic thinking from the world-class athletes onboard. The championship unfolds across a global circuit of Grand Prix events held in stunning coastal locations, culminating in a high-stakes Grand Final that determines the season champion, all while promoting sustainability through its unique Impact League.

Designing a safety-critical product for the demanding marine environment of SailGP, without hindering the athletes’ performance, presented a significant design challenge for Mouse. However, much like the SailGP athletes thrive under pressure, we embraced this opportunity.

Collaborating closely with both the GBR team athletes and Spinlock, we developed a deep understanding of the sport’s unique demands and the stringent regulatory requirements for Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs). This knowledge formed the foundation for our design and prototyping stages.

Through iterative feedback after each round of prototyping, we refined the design and tweak prototypes, until it achieved the perfect balance of ergonomics, aerodynamics, enhanced safety, and optimal athlete performance. This collaborative approach enabled us to translate verbal feedback into functional and performance-enhancing products.

Utilising cutting-edge 3D modelling software, laser-cut patterns, and industrial sewing, we rapidly created prototypes in the UK. Shrinking timescales for faster turn around between on-water testing sessions.

Our design philosophy prioritised reducing bulk and maximizing agility, crucial for the quick manoeuvres and high-speed racing found in SailGP racing. Material selection was paramount, leading us to choose lightweight foams and durable, water-resistant fabrics capable of withstanding the harsh marine environment.

With over 40 years of experience in designing equipment for extreme sports, this SailGP project was a fantastic opportunity for our team at Mouse to leverage our expertise in safety-critical sportswear design. We believe this project highlights our commitment to innovative product design and our ability to deliver solutions that exceed expectations. We are incredibly proud to have contributed to the safety and performance of the GBR SailGP team, demonstrating our dedication to pushing the boundaries of design and engineering.
