Product Design vs. Product Design

Confused? You’re not alone. So you’re either here because you need a physical design and you’re definitely in the right place, or you’re really disappointed because we’re not APP developers. The term “product design” has become incredibly broad, but what exactly does it mean?

The Classic “Product”: An Actual Thing

Traditionally, we think of products as physical objects – something you can touch, feel, use and interact with. We use these products everyday, phones, shoes, cars even the disposable cup your morning caffeine fix comes in. So this definition is still true, however the definition of product is much wider than that.

Products as Solutions

According to Wikipedia, a product is “an item offered to a market to satisfy a desire or need of a customer.”

So much more than a physical object. Think of a product as a solution to a customer’s problem. Meaning a product can be physical, virtual or a service. An insurance company will offer multiple products to their customers, each insurance policy customized for their customers needs.

The APP bubble

There seems to be APPs for everything, As designers we can see the huge benefits they offer to users. So it’s no wonder that product design has become synonymous with app design. Should you search product design jobs the majority of the results will be for app developer roles. So are they taking our jobs?

We’re Still Here and Evolving!

Not at all, we haven’t been replaced, we’ve simply evolved. Product design is more than just crafting physical objects, apps, or services – it’s a way of thinking. It’s a way of approaching problems creatively and finding solutions that truly resonate with users. We’re really excited to see how the new generation of product designers will evolve.

At Mouse, We’re Problem-Solving Ninjas

Here at Mouse, we’ve embraced this evolution. While we still love designing innovative and drop dead gorgeous products, we’ve honed our skills to become problem solvers. We listen to your needs and use the power of product design to craft innovative solutions. No matter what type of product you’re creating.

So, what does this all mean? The “product design” title might get thrown around a lot these days, but don’t let it confuse you. We’re still here, and we’re more powerful than ever. We’re the problem-solving ninjas, the solution architects, the designers who make a difference. Because good product design isn’t just about the “what,” it’s about the impact.
