Crafting Comfort & Control: The Design Journey for Spade Kayaks’ New Outfitting

We’re thrilled to share details of a recent collaboration with the renowned whitewater brand, Spade Kayaks. They approached us with a specific challenge: to design, develop, and produce a new generation of kayak outfitting that not only elevates the paddler’s connection and control but also boasts a standout aesthetic. Leveraging our expertise in tfrom over 10 years designing in the kayak industry, and our specialised small batch production, we embarked on a journey to redefine the interface between paddler and kayak.

The Challenge: Enhancing the Paddler Experience

In kayaking, the outfitting (seat, hip pads, thigh braces) is the crucial link between the user and the boat. Standard solutions often involve compromises. Spade Kayaks wanted an outfitting system that offered a more integrated, secure fit – translating subtle body movements directly into kayak response – while also visually complementing their high-performance kayaks.

Our Solution: Blending Rapid Prototyping with Advanced Production Techniques.

Our design and development process centred on advanced 3D foam forming techniques. This allowed us to:

• Design Ergonomically: Create complex, body-hugging shapes tailored for comfort and control during dynamic paddling.
• Develop Prototypes Rapidly: Iterate on designs efficiently to refine the fit and function based on paddler feedback.  We completed several round of prototypes for each individual aspect of the outfitting system initially and then worked up the final form into a complete solution that seamlessly worked together.
• Ensure Performance: Produce durable, lightweight components that provide exceptional support and direct feedback from the kayak.
• Achieve Superior Aesthetics: Integrate the outfitting seamlessly with the kayak’s lines, creating a cohesive and visually appealing final product.
