As a product designer, there’s no greater feeling than seeing a product you helped create stand the test of time. It’s a feeling of pride and satisfaction that stays with you. Recently, We had that exact experience while driving to Anglesey. We spotted a roof rack with a sea kayak that we designed almost 20 years ago—the P&H Cetus.
Seeing the Cetus on the road brought back a flood of memories and reinforced why this job is so rewarding. It’s not just about creating new products; it’s about designing a legacy. The Cetus isn’t just a kayak; it’s a testament to timeless design that still provides enjoyment for paddlers today.
How do you create a product like the Cetus that has such incredible longevity?
The Cetus was born from a unique blend of traditional hand-shaping techniques and modern digital design. It was a true hybrid of creativity and technology. It’s also the project where our founders Ben & Rich worked together.
Here’s a look at the development process:
We began the process with 3D CAD software (an old-school version called Pro Engineer!). This gave us the foundational structure.
We generated a series of 2D templates from the CAD data. These templates formed a skeleton frame, allowing us to use traditional kayak building techniques for the final shaping.
Using wood strips, we meticulously built the hull and deck. This process, similar to how the Inuit built kayaks, created a perfect surface for the product.
With the basic shape, or “plug,” we were able to test its performance on flat water. This early feedback was invaluable for assessing stability, handling, and cockpit positioning.
After perfecting the shape, we buffed the surfaces to a high-quality “Class A” finish. We used reflective lighting to ensure there were no imperfections, much like in traditional car design.
The journey from a plug to a paddle-able kayak was equally meticulous.
First, we created a two-part female mold from the finished plug. This is the traditional way to make composite kayaks. From these molds, we produced the very first prototype Cetus.
This is where the excitement peaked. We joined the two halves, added all the necessary components like fittings and seats, and took it for a test paddle. The physical feedback was essential, validating our theories and giving us real data to refine the final product.
The Cetus went on to become a best-seller for P&H Custom Sea Kayaks. It’s still in production today and has influenced a new generation of kayaks like the Delphin and Aires. The core design fundamentals we implemented in the Cetus continue to be a benchmark for exceptional sea kayak design worldwide.
The Cetus is a global product, paddled in oceans around the world. In the UK, you’re likely to spot one in hotspots like Anglesey, Pembrokeshire, Cornwall, Devon, or the West Coast of Scotland.
If you ever see a Cetus on the road, know that it’s a product designed with passion and built to last. It’s a reminder of why we at Mouse Design love what we do.
